I too enjoy the freedom and speed of the technological age but when it interferes with the art of making music then I have to put a halt to it. I’ll return calls on break or just simply let it go to voice mail. What a concept , a system that allows someone to record a message so you can call back at your convenience! Since when is answering your phone a must do situation in a performance? I’ve been on stage with musicians that answer calls, return and or write emails , do «perico» on their music stands while the band is playing etc. You ask about a Code of Ethics? …there should be. Here are a few of my basic ideas: If you’re getting paid then act as a professional such as: Be Prepared ( physically, mentally and musically) Be on time Be quiet Be courteous if someone has an idea or opinion Wear the right clothes for the job Bring the right equipment for the job Silence your cellphone or leave it in the case. Put it somewhere where you won’t get distracted or distract others. Own a pencil !!!! and mark parts clearly Don’t warm up on stage, the stage is for the performance. Listen to the ensemble and make personal adjustments to better the situation. Watch the Musical Director Those are my .02 cents.
